We invite you to hear about the common mistakes actuarial students make as they begin working full-time as well as how to put your best foot forward in this new environment. Alisa Santiago, ASA

Lincoln Financial Group | Actuarial Consultant

Alisa is an actuarial consultant at Lincoln Financial Group in Boston, Massachusetts. In this role, she works on short term disability pricing, with a focus on absence management and state PFL products. Prior to this role, she worked on the modeling and risk governance team within Life Solutions. Alisa is originally from northwest Pennsylvania and graduated from Purdue University in December, 2020. She attained her ASA designation in June 2023 and is currently pursuing her FSA on the ILA track. In her spare time, Alisa enjoys playing tennis and painting.

Marta M. Candelas Batista

New York Life | Actuarial Assistant

Marta is an Actuarial Assistant at New York Life in New York City. She works as part of the Group Benefit Solutions Pricing team, focusing on cross-product assumptions. Before joining full time at New York Life, she interned with John Hancock as part of their pricing team. Marta is originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico, where she graduated from high school. She then pursued her bachelor’s degree at Vassar College, where she graduated with a major in Mathematics and minors in Chemistry and Hispanic Studies. Marta is currently pursuing her ASA credentials. In her free time, Marta enjoys going to the beach, baking, and dog walking.

Christian Valerio

Oliver Wyman | Actuarial Consultant

Christian A. Valerio is an Actuarial Consultant in the Chicago office of Oliver Wyman Actuarial Consulting, Inc. He specializes in reserving work for property and casualty self-insurance lines. His primary responsibilities consist of providing risk financing guidance on actuarial assignments to a variety of insurance, reinsurance, and self-insured organizations. Christian has provided actuarial consulting services for over 2 years. Prior to joining Oliver Wyman, Christian attended the University of Notre Dame where he earned his Bachelor of Science, majoring in applied and computational mathematics and statistics with minors in actuarial science and data science. In his spare time, Christian enjoys playing guitar, basketball, reading, and volunteering.

Virna Cristina Lazo Herrera

Northwestern Mutual | Actuarial Consultant

Virna Cristina is an Actuarial Consultant working at Northwestern Mutual in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She is currently part of the Actuarial Leadership Development Program (ALDP), under the Whole Life (WL) Pricing rotation. In this role, she prices new WL products and supports the yearly dividend scale process. She also has previous experience in Asset Adequacy Testing (AAT), Universal Life (UL) Pricing and Public Investments. Prior to her Northwestern Mutual role, she worked as a mathematics teacher in Baltimore, Maryland. Virna is originally from Lima, Peru and graduated from the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities in 2016 and Johns Hopkins University in 2019. Virna is completing her last ASA requirement, the APC, in July and will be taking her second FSA exam in the Fall. In her spare time, Virna enjoys traveling, sewing, rock climbing and spending time with her partner and two dogs.
