This Prospect Newsletter is provided to our college/university students, recent graduates, and career changers to keep you current with OLA's various activities, spotlight members of our community, and connect you with career and development opportunities.

January 2023 Highlights

2023 OLA ANNUAL LEADERSHIP MEETING

At the end of January, we held our first in-person Annual Leadership Meeting since 2020! The OLA Leadership team got together in Scottsdale, AZ to strategize for 2023, figure out what we can do to make the biggest impact for the community, and of course spend time bonding and enjoying the limited time together (with a salsa lesson lead by two of our very own Program Managers!).

We'd like to thank the team members at Nationwide, one of OLA's Platinum Sponsors, for their invaluable assistance in planning this year's meeting at their Scottsdale, AZ, offices. We'd also like to thank the employers of many of OLA's Leadership team members for sponsoring their travel costs associated with attending this year's meeting.

OLA @ GIS REGIONAL CONFERENCE (DFW)

Are you attending the 2023 Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS) Regional Conference in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex this upcoming week (February 17-18, 2023)?

Manuel Guerra, OLA's Director of Corporate Engagement, will be representing his company (Oliver Wyman) at the conference career fair. Stop by the Oliver Wyman booth and introduce yourself! In addition to getting to meet a member of OLA's Board of Directors, you may also learn more about a future employer!

Save the Date: CAS Student Program in San Diego

The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) is offering an in-person Student Program at this year’s Ratemaking, Product and Modeling (RPM) Seminar in San Diego, CA on March 14, 2023. Members of CAS Student Central (which is FREE to join) are invited to participate in this FREE one-day program!

CAS Student Program Attendees Will:

Learn more about the CAS, Ratemaking, and the Property and Casualty (P&C) Industry
Network and connect with CAS Members
Attend professional concurrent sessions and student-specific sessions

2023 CVS Health and Aetna Concord College Day

Did you know that in 2018, CVS Health bought Aetna? Now the company is called Aetna, a CVS Health Company.

CVS Health and Aetna Concord College Day is a half day-long virtual experience for all college students. The goal of the program is to introduce top students to CVS Health and Aetna's actuarial internship and full-time programs as well as teach students about health insurance. The event also serves as an opportunity for students to distinguish themselves in advance of the 2023 recruiting cycle, as several attendees from prior years were hired for the company's 2023 Summer Internship Program.

CVS Health and Aetna Concord College Day will take place on Friday, April 14, 2023.

Announcements

OLA ACADEMY IS BACK IN BUSINESS!

Now that the new year/semester/quarter is in full-swing, OLA is excited to announce that OLA Academy has reopened for 2023 after a short hiatus for maintenance and upgrades. Starting in 2023, all content (i.e. video lessons) and resources (i.e. resume reviews and mock interviews) will be hosted and facilitated on the OLA Member Portal.

Were you enrolled in OLA Academy for 2022? We have great news for you: you have been automatically rolled over into the 2023 OLA Academy program, so no need to reapply!

As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to the OLA Academy team at academy@latinoactuaries.org if you have any further questions.

SPREAD THE NEWS--OLA SCHOLARSHIPS

Do you know any Latine students that would benefit from our scholarships? If so, please help us spread the word so we can reach as many students as possible.

The link to the applications can be found here, and applications are due April 15, 2023.

We also encourage students to look at all the scholarships listed in case they qualify for something else. We'd like them to get as much support as possible!

LUCAS REGINA

Hometown: Arlington Heights, IL

University: University of Iowa

Major: B.S. Actuarial Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Certificate in Risk Management and Insurance

Expected Graduation Date: December 2024

How has OLA impacted your career? OLA has been such an incredible organization to be a part of! The career fairs hosted by OLA, in particular, introduced me to a variety of employers and helped me see the opportunities out there. Additionally, being a tutor for exams P and FM allows me to meet motivated, ambitious future actuaries; I am so grateful to be a part of their journey down the exam path!

Lucas has been a volunteer exam tutor for Exams P and FM for our other OLA members!

RYAN DIAZ

Hometown: Jacksonville, FL

University: University of Florida

Major: Finance

Expected Graduation Date: May 2025

Tell us a little about yourself: I like playing soccer, pickleball, and basketball. I’m also always looking for fun skate spots and am a frequent hiker!

How has OLA impacted your career? I love helping out with OLA in any way I can. They’ve been instrumental in helping me begin my actuarial career and I will always be grateful for that. They do a great job and are all incredibly passionate and kind people.

How have you been involved with OLA so far? I have participated in the OLA Academy, been an OLA Campus Ambassador, a member of the Rising Leaders Program, and have been the recipient of an academic scholarship, an exam reimbursement/stipend, and a conference/convention travel scholarship.

Ryan is currently an actuarial intern with Nationwide!
